This is probably one of the most creative things I've seen in the last 9 months. I agree with you about the copyright stuff. That knowledge without a doubt is the interesting and important stuff I have learned this month. I have a very different perspective on sharing music and how I can move forward with my own aspirations of being a songwriter. It has been a great class and you showed it all in under 2 minutes!

Alright, this is the third time I am doing this post, my internet keeps crashing, AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

I complete understand your perspective, I think any one who has children, grand children, nieces, nephews, or friends with children, would. We can't teach our children by hiding them away, only by making them aware. We have to teach them about making good decisions and hope they are listening, and then we need to trust their judgement and hope we taught them well. A little praying never hurts either. It's times like this that reminds me of a quote from Albert Einstein, "The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."

Debb, you know that I am a very positive person and educator who wants only the best for his students, but I still have reservations about the Giving an A idea. I love that it is idealistic, but it is so far from realistic. I would rather teach them that it is not about the A at all. We have to measure our students and instructors because our accrediting commission is measuring us. The working world will be immediately measuring our graduates. If this is the first time they are measured, they will not know how to handle it.

Deb, I wish I was at the beach with you! But I agree, every child is unique with something to offer and we as educators need to know how to encourage them and motivate them. I am currently dealing with motivating my daughter to play tennis. She is a straight A student and I put her in tennis camp for the summer and she is traumatized that she is not the best player. It has been a great experience for her because she is seeing that it takes work! It is definitely making her a better person but she is struggling with it because this is not the norm for her. I call her everyday to tell her that I am proud of her for trying and that it takes time. Self confidence is soooooo important and I am trying to show her that her confidence is everything and that she needs to be positive!

Hilarious video, Deb. However, it was so sad to see he had no clue how to use the MacBook. It's hard to believe he was supposed to support his staff. This video is comparable to my thesis and the research I've conducted. All of our rooms include SMART Boards (we even have extras this year) and teachers have no clue how to use them. To be honest, I attended a session one evening and it still isn't enough. Our district has resourceful Reading Coaches who assist with the entire staff focusing on reading strategies, but I also think it's time we get Technology Coaches! Just a thought.

Don't get me wrong I love this Ted video and yes Deb great post. Todd, I know you're not one of those professors whose not trying to inspire, so that's not a blow at you! Full Sail has been the best college experience of my life, I like that the professors are approachable and not stoic and impressionable like many I've come across. They are always trying to make things creative and they bring such a diverse array of personalities and backgrounds!

Debb, I love that video also. Being a college level graphic design instructor I get to see the long term effects of this issue first hand. The students in my program have chosen creativity for a living, yet they have lost the ability to think creatively. When I give the a blank canvas they look like deer in headlights. It's almost cult like, they need to be deprogramed before the can move forward. Maybe that's why I love my job so much. My goal is not just to teach them about graphic design, but to enrich their lives for ever and put the power of creativity back in their hands. When I see that light go back on it's like magic. There is no feeling in the world like it.

Great post, I can feel the love. I got your back Debb, you are not alone and I am not one for backing down.

"When our students go out into the work force they will be expected to be creative and innovative in order to be successful, not just great test takers."

We talk about schools killing creativity, but the workforce does at a monumental rate.

I'd like to think that the workforce would let their employees be a bit more creative, but many times they don't. I've seen many employees come up with ideas, not just in the teacher biz, but other areas, and they can them. They either take over the idea without giving credit or completely disregard the individual.

Companies make sure that the low-level individual on the front line has no input or growth within the company. It's really ashamed.

So there are many teachers who do want to be creative, but there are more companies who deny creativity alongside some "old skool" teachers.

What about the differences between creativity in K-12 VS. Collegians? I've walked through the halls of college recently, and it wasn't quite intriguing.

Love the 4th screen as an ad, but it's flawed in that the thing that made all of these "screens" successful was the shared experience. It's just like you mentioned in a previous entry, about sharing the previous night's Seinfeld episode around the water-cooler, the real fun was in the sharing, not just the first experience of watching the episode. And I love the skating babies...
